A newly married couple was traveling to the wife’s parents’ house which was in another town. While they were waiting for the train, the husband, who was not a smoker, bought a cigarette and started smoking. His new bride of the 80s, shy and apprehensive to say anything, came closer and stood near him.
Wife: Do you smoke?
Husband: Yes.
Wife: It is not a good habit. You should not smoke.
Husband: Okay. Did your father smoke?
Wife: Yes. But he had quit smoking.
Husband: When did he quit smoking?
Wife: 2 years ago.
Husband: That is, 2 years before his death? He died 4 months ago, didn’t he?
Wife: Yes.
Husband: Exactly. See, smokers die within 2 years after they quit smoking. I will quit smoking the moment you ask me to. Do you want me to quit now?
Wife: No, no. You carry on.
When Papa narrated this incident to me yesterday, I could see the immense pleasure and love in his eyes. My mother who was just wiping her face after making wudu started laughing at it. I could see that they had built memories together. They had grown old together. Their love was different. He never pampered her openly in front of the world and she never showcased her emotions for him. But they love each other and have been there for each other always.
At once I recalled:
May Allaah bless them with long and healthy lives here, keep their shade upon me, my siblings and my son for years to come and unite them in Jannah with much more love and happiness (Ameen)

“And of His signs is that He created for you from yourselves mates that you may find tranquillity in them; and He placed between you affection and mercy. Indeed in that are signs for a people who give thought.”
