We often say things to people who are close to us without thinking twice. It is good to have people who understand and who love us. But, it is not very easy to differentiate between love and attachment. Attachment is temporary. So, be very careful while judging someone’s feelings towards you.
It is only love that doesn’t change. But, love is very rarely found. Love teaches you patience. Love symbolises sacrifice at its highest. Love undergoes various transformations if needed, but it never dies. Whereas, attachment fades away under unfavourable circumstances. It is not that the person who is attached to you is at fault. The mistake is yours if you fail to understand his true feelings.
If a person is attached to you today, he may not do anything to harm you. But, if his attachment gets reduced due to any practical reason, he won’t be the same ever. It is possible that a person who is attached to you today, might not keep you anywhere on his priority list tomorrow! Irrespective of your love for the person, he might just be attached to you. And this attachment would cost you very heavily if you are not careful.

This beautiful Hadith is a wonderful reminder:
Abu Huraira (may Allaah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allaah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Love your beloved moderately, perhaps he will become hateful to you someday. Hate whom you hate moderately, perhaps he will become your beloved someday.”
[Sunan al-Tirmidhī]
There is a wisdom beyond our imagination in this gem. True, there is no control over our hearts, but our speech is definitely under our power. Speak less. Choose your words wisely. They can be used against you.
